Edika Kohime participate to The Runway Perfect Hunt 5, April 1st to 30th 2014. This is an interview to let know about this talented designer installed on Admicile2, working in fashion design for years.

Q1(fr) – Depuis combien de temps êtes vous sur Second Life et qu’est-ce qui vous y a intéressé?

Q1(en) – How long have you been in Second Life and what interested you in it?

R1(fr)- J’ai découvert Second Life le 22 mai 2007, jour de mon anniversaire réel. Une curiosité grâce aux – ou à cause des – médias. Au début, j’étais assez perdue, maladroite et je n’ai pas eu un réel déclic. Je suis revenue quelques mois après, avec une envie furieuse de créer quelque chose ici, en étant persuadée que ce support pouvait offrir de multiples possibilités pour les esprits créatifs. Tout me paraissait impossible au début, entre l’envie et la réalisation… et la foi d’avoir une activité artistique sur Second Life m’a obligé à aller au delà du “je n’y arriverai jamais”.

A1(en)- I discovered Second Life on May 22nd 2007, my real life birthday. I was curious because of the medias. At the beginning, I was a little lost, awkward and I didn’t had a real hunch for it. I came back some months later with a furious desire to create something here, being convinced that this support have many possibilities to offer for creative minds. Everything seemed impossible, at start, between the will and the results. The faith to have an artistic activity on Second Life forced me to go beyond the “I will never succeed”.

Q2(fr)- Qu’est-ce qui vous a donné le goût de créer des vêtements sur Second Life?

Q2(en)- What gave you the desire to create clothes in Second Life?

R2(fr)- Une créatrice que j’admire depuis le début, comme Pixivor Allen (À la Folie), une passion commune: “Les fleurs”… Elle a été sans le savoir un peu mon “mentor” au niveau création et l’idée d’en faire mon activité principale est venue comme cela, mais les débuts ont été forts difficiles, n’ayant été enseignée par personne. Comme les fleurs sont faites pour être dans des vases, j’ai préféré les porter sous forme de vêtements, puisque ce sont ma source d’inspiration principale. Cette passion dure depuis 2008 et le plaisir reste toujours aussi intense. C’est une autre forme d’expression artistique, tout comme ceux qui font du build, ou créent des objets: Donner vie avec élégance, à partir d’un cube… et rien de plus plaisant que de pouvoir aussi exprimer sa féminité, ici, sous forme de vêtements qu’on ne porterait pas forcément autrement. Le plaisir est double lorsque l’on voit d’autres personnes porter vos créations.

A2(en)- A Creator I admire since the beginning, like Pxivor Allen (À la Folie), a common passion: “Flowers”… Unaware of it, she was kind of my mentor in design and the idea to make it my main activity came like that, but it was hard cause i didn’t have any teaching. As the flowers are made to be in vases, I prefered wearing them as clothes, because they are my main source of inspiration. This passion last since 2008 and the pleasure remain still as intense as in the beginning. It’s another form of artistic expression, just like those building or creating objects: Giving life with elegance, from a cube… and nothing is more pleasant than being able to express our feminity, here, with the clothes we wouldn’t necessarily wear elsewhere. It’s double joy when I see others wear my creations.

Q3(fr)- Quelle création vous a rendu le plus fière, et pourquoi?

Q3(en)- Which creation made you the most proud, and why?

R3(fr)- La robe BOHEME, d’inspiration indienne, qui reste ma préférée, et la plus vendue. Un mélange de tissus indiens de toutes les couleurs! Elle est éclatante et fait voyager… La vente n’est pas qu’une question d’argent, c’est surtout d’avoir réussi à avoir fait passer un message virtuel, d’y avoir apporter son plaisir et de le partager.

A3(en)- BOHEME dress, from indian inspiration, still my favorite and the most sold. A mix of multicolored indian fabrics! It’s is a brithful dress and inspiring travel… Selling is not only a money matter, it’s more like succeeding in transmitting a virtual message, to bring our pleasure and to share it.

Q4(fr)- À quel type de clientèle s’adressent vos créations?

Q4(en)- Which clientele you wish to reach with your creations?

R4(fr)- À toutes les femmes qui aiment l’élégance… et la diversité, puisqu’avec mon amie, Marine Dumpling (Lipstick Fashion), nous nous partageons des styles différents, du classique au casual, souvent dans un esprit très onirique dont les fleurs sont toujours l’élément central… Les femmes doivent se sentir belles. Au début, c’était une clientèle plutôt française, et depuis, 80 % de ma clientèle est étrangère. Les femmes aiment ce qui est vaporeux, sensuel, et je pense leur apporter ces effets gracieux qu’elles affectionnent.

A4(en)- All women who like elegance… and diversity, because with my friend, Marine Dumpling (Lipstick Fashion), we share different styles, from classic to casual, often in a very dreamlike spirit in which the flowers are always the central element… Women should feel in beauty. At start, I had rather a French clientele, and since then, 80% of my customers are foreigners. Women love what is vaporous, sensual… and I think I bring them those gracious effects they are fond of.

Q5(fr)- Qui sont Marine et les autres créateurs qui exposent dans votre boutique avec vous et pourquoi vous être associée à eux?

Q5(en)- who are Marine and the other creators sharing your store with you and why did you associate yourself with them?

R5(fr)- Marine a été une de mes premières élèves il y a plusieurs années, et surtout une très bonne amie. Je m’amuse de la note personnelle que j’avais mise sur son profil: “future créatrice”. Elle était très assidue avec une envie furieuse d’y arriver. Je ne me suis pas trompée, puisque aujourd’hui, nous partageons notre grand magasin, Marine étant spécialisée dans les robes de soirées. Nous avons chacune nos idées, et des styles différents, tout en partageant nos astuces et notre savoir-faire. Morgane Paris PArX (MPP), créatrice de chaussures bien connue sur SL, est une amie de longue date aussi, qui a toujours été présente amicalement, et surtout m’a fait beaucoup avancer techniquement. Nous sommes fidèles en amitié, et il est fort agréable de pouvoir partager nos connaissances, et surtout aussi d’apprendre des autres. On n’est jamais au bout de ce que l’on doit apprendre, la création doit aussi rimer avec humilité…

A5(en)- Marine was one of my first students some years ago, and most of all a good friend. A personal note I wrote on her profile then amuses me: “future designer”. She was very committed with a furious desire to succeed. I was not wrong, because today, we share our big store, Marine being specialised in evening dresses. We have each our ideas, our different styles sharing the same tricks and skills. Morgane Paris PArX (MPP). well known shoes designer in SL, is an old friend as well, who was always present in friendship and, most of all, helped me to evolve technically. We are loyal friends and it is nice to be able to shore our knowledge and learn from each other. We never are on top of what we know and have always something new to learn. Creation should also rhyme with humility…

Q6fr- Depuis que vous êtes dans le métier, plusieurs changements ont eu lieu, dont l’arrivée du mesh, et bientôt le fitting mesh. Comment vous adaptez-vous à tous ces changements?

Q6(en)- Since you are designer, many changes occured, like the mesh clothes and soon the fitting mesh. How did you adapt to those changes?

R(fr)- A vrai dire, nous avons mis un an pour en venir au mesh: Manque de connaissances techniques, et cela parait insurmontable… Comme il faut s’adapter à la demande, je tente très timidement de faire quelques créations, sans toutefois faire les mesh moi-même (mais c’est en cours) pour le moment. Besoin d’apprivoiser cette technique, mais mes clientes sont assez “timides” de ce côté-là, et regrettent le manque de flexibilité. Alors j’allie mesh et flex pour garder ce côté féminin.
J’aime les meshs pour la diversité créative qu’ils apportent, mais il est clair que ces techniques ne sont pas à la portée de tous, cela nécessitant des connaissances de logiciels assez lourds.

A(en)- In fact, it took a year before I upgraded with mesh because of lack of technical knowledge and it seems insurmountable. But as we should adapt to the demand, I try slowly to create some, but i won’t use my own yet (it’s in progress). I need to learn and be comfortable with the technique. My customers are a little bit shy about mesh because it lacks flexibility. So I mix mesh and flex to keep that feminine aspect they looking for. I love mesh for the creative diversity it brings, but it is obvious that the technical skills are not reachable for everyone, because it needs to use heavy logiciels knowledge.

Q7(fr)- Est-ce que vous avez des liens avec le domaine de la mode dans la vraie vie?

Q7(en)- do you have any links with fashion industry in real life?

R7(fr) Absolument aucun… Mais un vide qui va probablement se combler avec une grande star de la mode avec qui je vais être en contact par une de ses mannequins. J’ai eu la chance de recevoir chez moi un grand couturier qui n’est pas moins que Christian Lacroix! Mon but serait de faire un vrai book avec mes créations, et de les proposer à des créateurs. Qui sait? Christian Lacroix a, par ailleurs, été jury d’un concours sur Second Life il y a quelques années où il fallait créer un costume de scène à partir de ses tissus, concours organisé par le CNCS : Centre National du Costume de Scène qui s’était implanté sur Second Life.

A7(en)- Absolutely none… But it is a void to be probably soon fullfilled with a great star of fashion with whom I might
get in contact through one of his models. I had the chance to have for dinner at home a great designer who is not the
least Christian Lacroix. My wish is to make a real book with my SL designs and make suggestions to great designers. Who knows? Christian Lacroix have been jury in a second Life contest some years ago introducing scene costumes using his fabrics. (contest oganised by CNCS (NCSC): National Center of Scene Costume
who got inside Second Life.

Q8(fr)- Qu’est-ce qui vous différencie des autres créateurs?

Q8(en)- What makes you different from other designers?

R(fr)- Comme pour certaines créatrices, on reconnait notre style immédiatement. J’ai travaillé longuement pour y parvenir. À vrai dire, je n’ai quasiment aucun contact avec les autres créatrices, dont je ne sait pas quels sont leurs réelles motivations (artistique ? financière ?). Je pense, tout comme mon amie Marine, mettre tout le plaisir de créer dans nos tenues, et cela doit peut être se voir, enfin je l’espère. On reste surtout dans un “même esprit” qui est notre marque de fabrique et semble plaire, de la création jusqu’à la photo du vêtement. Au début, il est difficile de trouver ses marques dans le domaine de la création, tout semble avoir été tellement fait, et vu! Finalement, on espère vraiment se démarquer dans un style qui est le nôtre, même s’il est récurrent dans le thème. Mais je reste très admirative du talent des autres créatrices. Ah! Si! Un truc en plus! Nous restons très attachées à nos clientes, donc nous essayons d’être le plus souvent disponibles, de ne pas être invisibles, d’être réactives aux demandes, et de montrer que nous ne sommes pas là que pour “vendre”, mais aussi pour garder surtout un lien relationnel et amical. Nous avons la prétention d’aimer ce que nous faisons et surtout de ne jamais considérer que nous sommes “arrivées” au sommet. Le relationnel est extrêmement important, c’est aussi une approche commerciale je le reconnais, qui prend parfois du temps, mais nécessaire. Second Life n’est pas loin de la réalité. Nos clientes achètent nos vêtements, c’est grâce à elles que nous continuons, et ne sont pas de simples porte-manteaux…. elles sont notre meilleure publicité, et nous nous faisons un devoir “d’exister” en tant que personne, et pas seulement en avatar-commerçant.

A(en)- As some others, we can recognise our style immediately. I worked long to get there. In fact i have almost no contact with other designers of which i know nothing about their motivations (artistic? financial?) I think, just like my friend Marine, put all our joy to create inside our outfits and it should probably show, at least, I hope. We stay mostly in a “similar mind” which is our trend mark, and it seems to be appreciated, from design creation to garment photography. At start, il is hard to find our mark in design, everything seems to have been done, and seen! Finally, we really hope to stand out in a style that is our own. even if it repeats in theme. Though, I truly sdmire others designers talent. Oh! Yes! One more thing! We stay very attached to our customers, so we try to but most of the time reachable, to not be invisible, to be reactive to requests and to show we are not there only to “sell”, but also to keep a friendly relationship with them. We are also demonstrative of the love of what we do and never pretend we are “arrived” to the top. Public relation is extreamely important and i admit it’s still a commercial strategy that take some time, but it is necessary. Second Life is not far from reality. Our custommers actually buy our product and it’s them who makes us continue. They are not simple coat-pegs… they are our best advertisers and it is a duty to “exist” as an individual, not as only commercial-avatar.

Q9(fr)- Vous êtes impliquée dans plusieurs événements de la mode (défilés, concours…) Quelles sont vos motivations et quels événements vous attirent le plus? Pour quelles raisons?

Q9(en)- You are involved in many fashion events (shows, contests, hunts…) What are you motivations and which events interests you the most? And why?

R9(fr) A vrai dire, nous ne faisons pas la course aux events. On laisse les choses venir. Certains events sont nécessaires, uniquement pour l’image de marque, car les vraies retombées sont rares. Nous participons aussi bien en tant que sponsor pour des petits events, lorsque cela peut aider ceux qui les organisent. Beaucoup de créateurs refusent les events qui n’ont pas de renommée, ce qui est dommage. Les hunts en revanche, vrai, amènent beaucoup de monde, mais pas forcément des ventes, c’est surtout pour le fun et le plaisir de faire découvrir nos vêtements, qui seront forcément portés à un moment…. donc cela reste une bonne publicité. On sponsorise souvent des concours et des défilés, aussi, dont ceux de chez KV Fashion Dream, des italiens très professionnels en matière de défilés. Et aussi de Bel’Lys qui a fait avec MASQUERADE un defilé surprenant et original. Je t’ai toujours citée (Sue Moonwall) comme une des meilleures organisatrices et des plus originales que j’ai connue. Un défilé très inattendu et très bien orchestré.

A9(en)- In fact, we do not run for events. We let things come to us. Some events are necessary, only for visibility and image of mark, because direct benefits are rare. We participate also as sponsors for small events, when we can help the organisers. Lots of designers refuse events whithout prestigious ackowledgement. It is a shame. Hunts, though, truly brings a lot of people, but not necessarily sellings. It’s still a great advertisement. We do it mostly because it’s fun and we like to make discover our product that will be worn for a moment… so it stays a good publicity. We are often sponsors for contests and also fashion shows, like KV Fashion Dream, who are very professional in shows matters. And also Bel’Lys who have done with MASQUERADE a show very unexpected and original. I have always mention you (Sue Moonwall) as one of the bests organisers and of the most original I’ve ever met. A show very unusual and very well orchestrated.

Q10(fr)- Quels sont vos projets pour la prochaine année?

Q10(en)- What are your projects for the coming year?

R10(fr)- Nous mettre à fond dans la technique du mesh qui nous échappe encore, mais en gardant notre âme du départ, je suis pour ma part assez tentée de faire des vêtements fantastiques. Mais parfois l’inspiration manque. Il faut à chaque fois un coup de coeur pour un tissu pour que l’envie démarre… Difficile de faire des projets. J’aime bien l’inattendu, je raisonne au jour le jour…

A10(en)- To invest much effort in mesh technique that we still struggle with, but keeping the spirit of the start. I am personally tempted to make fantastic garments. But sometimes inspiration isn’t there. Each time I need a heart feeling for a fabric to let the desire to create happen… It is difficult to make projects, then. I like the unexpected, I think and live day by day…

Q11(fr)- Qu’aimeriez-vous dire aux lecteurs qui lisent cette entrevue?

Q11(en)- What would you like to tell to the readers of this interview?

R11fr)- Que celles qui ont envie de créer n’hésitent pas… Osez! Ne jamais dire “je ne saurais jamais”, tant que l’on a pas essayé… ensuite, promis, c’est comme un “virus” qui ne vous lâche pas. Même si les débuts sont difficiles, tant que vous mettez de l’amour dans ce que vous faites, cela se verra toujours. Et profitez de cette seconde vie pour vous offrir le luxe de vous faire plaisir, d’être une autre femme…

A11(en)- I wish those who wants to create don’t hesitate… Dare! Don’t ever say “I won’t ever know”. As long as we don’t try… After, promise, it’s like a virus that lingers. even if it is hard, as long as you put love in what you do, it will show. And enjoy this Second Life to offer yourself the luxury to make you happy, to be another woman…

I am glad to present you our first male designer of this edition, which not only is funny and talented but also one of the lucky one to be able to say they were a Mr Virtual World contestant, MR. V♛ BELGIUM 2012. His creations are stylish, and i urge all models to go by his store, his name is Boniefacio from the store Dot BE Fashion.

Hello Boniefacio! Thanks for taking the time out to talk with us.

MB: You have a lovely brand. Tell us the story about how your store came to be.

BR: Well i started in the MVW competition and we had to do different stylings. I then began to build my outfit for cubism and was thinking hey, what if i bring some of my idea’s into sl … and so i did.  And since i’m from Belgium the name Dot BE Fashion Is a reference to Belgium.

MB: Is there a gender you prefer clothes for the most?

BR: Well i prefer making clothing for both, so i don’t really have a preference. Although its not easy and i have to change into a female form to get all the designs right and see if they match.

MB: Are you the type of designer that constructs clothes spontaneously or do you sketch our your pieces before hand?

BR:  Well most of the times i base my clothes on rl designs and art. I try to bring the rl fashion into sl. My latest collection comes from the runway and from Burberry, but sometimes i wake up at night, take my pen and paper and start to write ideas on it. My new collection that’s coming out after my fashion show will be based on fall/winter.

MB: Would you ever consider teaching others the skill of designing?

BR: I could consider this, but i think designing has to be inside of you. Its an art or like a dj. You can teach someone to sketch stuff or to mix music but if the feeling is not within the person you can teach as much as you can there will be no result.

MB: Describe a designing horror story (such as a certain piece coming out completely wrong from what you imagined), if any?

BR:  I was working on my pieces for my fashion show that’s coming up 27 October and i had such a great design in my head until i brought it into sl and i was what am i thinking this doesn’t look right. After 2h of prims adjusting and texturing i decided to delete the entire stuff and start with something else.

MB: Use three words to describe your design aesthetic.

BR: Bring some art in to fashion casual and formal … o o that’s more then three words.

MB: If you could collaborate and make a brand with any designer on Second Life, who would it be?

BR: Yasum Designs, Azlyn makes fantastic outfits and handmade mesh. She is a wonderful, understanding and straight forward women.

MB: What’s in the future for Dot-Be Fashion?

BR: Well i hope Dot-be Fashion is going to stay and grow further in sl and on 27 October i’m going to show my new collection at 2pm. With some great models that will fill the stage and with 1 surprise … nah I’m not saying what it is. But i will say everyone is invited and they can send me a notecard to get a personal invite.

I have the pleasure to present to you all the very first interview of the Runway Perfect Hunt edition 3 with the designers. This first lady, was in the 2nd edition also, i am sure you will remember her from the gorgeous nails she offered! Adorable, fun, energetic and sweet, now is time for you to enter in her world and get to know better TRPH3 #30 – Kathrin Dassin of Moondance.

 

Hello Kathrin! Thanks for taking the time out to speak with us.

Morgane Batista: What inspires you the most to design? Whether it is bright colors, nature, patterns, etc.

Kathrin Dassin: I think it had alot to do with watching other people creating items for others in SL, and not finding something that fit me and what i was looking for.

MB: Name your favorite piece that you have made and the story behind it’s creation!

KD: I would have to say my saffron swirls 3d set. Which does have a story behind it. I created it while i was actually getting my RL wedding set up, and looking for a invitation that i could do. Well as i was doing the texture, I decided to use the texture for my wedding invite. And so my wedding invite, and my thank you cards, as well as my response cards ended up with that design, and i ended up wearing it in real life as well.

MB: Are there designers in real or SL (or both!) that you idolize?

KD: Yes there are, Spooky Mistwallow, owner of Kastlerock Couture, and Belle Roussel from Chop Zuey

MB: What’s next for the Moondance Boutique? (Any sneak peeks at potential nail sets?)

KD: Of course new nail set sand yes actually i can give you a sneak peek at a new nail that i’m working on, this nail is based on my favorite Anime of all time, Sailor Moon. This is being 100% hand drawn in photoshop and it is very intricate.

MB: If you could design any other thing in SL, what would it be? (Clothes, cars, houses, etc.)

KD: I think Jewelry, but not with the nails

MB: Describe your design aesthetic in 3 words.

KD: Unique, bold, classic

MB: How did you choose the name of your brand?

KD: I was doing belly dancing in the house one day and well the way they move their fingers looks so much more beautiful with nails on it, and one day i saw a bellydancer in front of the moon and that’s how i came up with the brand name

MB: When you came into Secondlife, did you know you wanted to be a designer?

KD: No I didn’t haha

MB: What are your other hobbies in Secondlife?

KD: I enjoy Roleplay, and taking pictures of myself, my husband and friends. And now styling outfits. I’ve started to find it very fun if frustration
